North Korea has been in the news for years now. Most obvious reason has been its deployment of nuclear stock and its anti US rhetorics. I wondered a lot of times about regimes like this, what about the 'aam aadmi ' in such countries ? Do people have the same atittude as the government has or are there people who can be genuine just as some of them are in our neighbors on the left?
Recently, I came across an interesting piece of article about the workers in North Korea. Shinwon is an South Korean firm which has opened factories in North Korea. As per one of the investors, North Korean workforce is " more efficient and competitive than any factory in China, Vietnam, or anywhere in the world ". The 900 workers in the factory in North Korea, just hundred of meters north of the demilitarized zone (DMZ), churns out 60,000 pieces of shirt, pants etc every month. The production can be increased ten folds by starting shipments abroad and 50 other textile mills of South Korea are going to open factories in North Korea. Jang Whan Bin, senior vice-president at Hyundai Asan, an affiliate of Hyundai Group estimates that some 300 South Korean companies will employ nearly 100,000 North Korean workers in Kaesong in a couple of years.
Although it will take a number of years for this economic integration in the Korean peninsula to be achieved fully, it certainly is a step in the right direction. This might help in changing the attitude of the current regime and open the country for much liberal trade, hence economic progress.
Time for our Indian investors to invest in our ' friendly neighbor' ??....
